How On-Road Price Is Calculated in India

Your on-road price is the ex-showroom price plus every charge needed to register and drive the car legally. Here’s what gets added on top:

  • Road tax (RTO): Set by your state, not the centre, so it’s the single biggest reason prices change from city to city. See the full RTO road tax by state breakdown.
  • Registration and HSRP: The RTO registration fee plus tamper-proof high-security number plates.
  • Insurance: A mandatory 1+3 cover for new cars, one year of own-damage protection plus three years of third-party.
  • FASTag and TCS: A FASTag for tolls, and 1% TCS on cars priced above ₹10 lakh, which you can claim back when you file your taxes.

Why On-Road Price Changes From City to City

The biggest variable is road tax. It’s a state subject, so every state sets its own rate, and the gap is wide. Some states charge around 6 to 8 percent of the car’s value, while others like Karnataka go up to 18 percent on higher-priced cars. On a ₹15 lakh SUV, that one difference can swing the on-road price by ₹1.5 to ₹2 lakh between two cities.

A few other things move the needle. Several states offer road tax concessions on electric cars, union territories like Chandigarh and Puducherry tend to keep rates low, and local registration or municipal charges differ in some places. Insurance premiums also shift a little by RTO zone.

That’s why a single on-road price for the whole country doesn’t exist. Use the city links above to see the exact figure where you’ll register the car, or check the full state-by-state table in our RTO road tax by state guide.

On-Road Price FAQs

What is the on-road price of a car?

It’s the total you pay to bring the car home and drive it legally. It includes the ex-showroom price plus road tax, registration, insurance, FASTag and any applicable TCS.

What's the difference between ex-showroom and on-road price?

Ex-showroom is the manufacturer’s price before local charges. On-road price adds road tax, registration, insurance and mandatory fees, and it’s what you actually hand over. Expect on-road to run roughly 15 to 25 percent higher.

Why is the on-road price higher in some cities?

Mostly road tax. Each state sets its own rate, so the same car can cost a lakh or two more in a high-tax state like Karnataka than in a lower-tax one. Registration and insurance zones add smaller differences.

Is insurance included in the on-road price?

Yes. New cars need a 1+3 cover, one year of own-damage plus three years of third-party, and that premium is part of the on-road price.

Is road tax a one-time payment?

For private cars it’s a one-time lifetime tax, valid for 15 years from registration. After that you renew the registration, not the road tax.

Can I reduce my on-road price?

A little. You can pick a base insurance plan over costly dealer add-ons, skip optional accessories and handling charges (dealer handling charges aren’t legally mandatory), and the TCS portion comes back to you when you file your taxes.
