Maruti Baleno Overview

The Baleno gets the practical basics right: compact outer dimensions, a usable cabin, low running costs, and a service network that’s genuinely easy to deal with. It’s not a performance car. What it does well is daily city use and family errands, with the occasional longer run, without making ownership complicated. The 318-litre boot and reasonable rear seat space mean it can serve as your primary household car, not just a commuter. If you’re comparing it against the Hyundai i20 or Toyota Glanza, the Baleno holds up well on features and pricing across most trim levels. For buyers who want straightforward hatchback ownership over several years, it’s a practical shortlist choice.

What We Love

  • Wide variant spread with petrol, AGS, and CNG options at practical price points
  • Refined 1.2-litre engine and easy city manners with light controls
  • Strong feature value in higher trims, including HUD and 360-view camera

Consider This

  • AMT is convenient but not as smooth as CVT or DCT alternatives
  • No turbo-petrol option for buyers who want stronger highway punch
  • Some key premium features are limited to upper variants

Maruti Baleno Pricing

Ex-showroom prices in Delhi run from ₹5,98,900 for the Sigma MT to ₹9,09,900 for the Alpha AGS. Nine variants covering petrol manual and AGS options, plus CNG, give you real choice without large gaps between trim steps. On-road price brings in registration fees and insurance on top, plus state-specific taxes. The total varies by city, so two buyers in different states can pay meaningfully different amounts for the same variant. Before settling on a trim, calculate your expected EMI against a realistic monthly fuel estimate for your actual usage. A higher variant with better comfort and safety equipment often makes more sense over three or four years than choosing the base trim purely to cut the initial outlay. Exchange value and insurance bundling can also shift the effective final amount, as can dealer add-ons.

Maruti Baleno Specifications

Power comes from a 1.2-litre K-Series Dual Jet Dual VVT petrol engine producing 88.5 bhp and 113 Nm, paired with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AGS. CNG variants use the same 1197 cc base with dedicated tuning: output drops to 76.4 bhp and 98.5 Nm, but running costs per kilometre are lower for high-usage daily drivers. Front-wheel drive across all variants. The naturally aspirated setup isn’t quick by any measure. But it’s smooth in city traffic and predictable at highway speeds, which suits the core use case well. If you need turbo-petrol performance, you’ll need to look elsewhere in the segment. For most buyers doing city commuting with occasional highway runs, this engine delivers adequate performance with low maintenance costs.

Maruti Baleno Dimensions

Length is 3990 mm, width 1745 mm, height 1500 mm, and wheelbase 2520 mm. Ground clearance is 170 mm. Boot space is 318 litres. The short length makes city parking and tight lane navigation straightforward. The 2520 mm wheelbase allows reasonable rear-seat packaging, and four passengers are comfortable, though a fifth adult in the rear will find it a squeeze on longer trips. The 318-litre boot fits a couple of check-in bags without folding the rear seats, which makes it usable for airport runs and weekend travel. At 170 mm ground clearance, most speed breakers and rough patches are handled without issue. Compact enough for old-city lanes, functional enough for family use.

Maruti Baleno Safety Rating

Safety equipment includes Electronic Stability Program with hill-hold assist, ABS with EBD and brake assist, plus reverse parking sensors. Six airbags are standard across variants. Higher trims add a 360-view camera and ISOFIX child-seat anchors. Bharat NCAP tested the gasoline variants in 2024 and published a 4-star adult occupant score (24.04/32) and a 3-star child occupant score (34.81/49). The gap between the two is worth noting if you’re buying this as a family car with young passengers. Equipment spread varies between trims, so check exactly what your shortlisted variant includes before booking. For family buyers, confirming airbag count and ISOFIX availability in your chosen trim is a sensible step.

Maruti Baleno Mileage

Petrol manual is rated at 22.35 km/l. The AGS comes in slightly higher at 22.94 km/l. CNG manual goes to 30.61 km/kg. These are ARAI test-cycle numbers. In real city driving with AC running and frequent stops, expect lower figures. The gap between ARAI and actual city mileage is typically 3-4 km/l for petrol. Highway driving with a steady throttle tends to get closer to the rated numbers. Which fuel type makes sense for you depends on your daily distance and route. If you’re covering 40 km or more daily, the CNG variant’s per-kilometre cost advantage is worth calculating specifically for your commute. Check CNG station availability on your usual route too. For petrol buyers, the manual and AGS are close enough on efficiency that your transmission preference matters more than the mileage difference.

Maruti Baleno Colours

Seven colours are available: Nexa Blue, Grandeur Grey, Arctic White, Splendid Silver, Opulent Red, Luxe Beige, and Bluish Black. Lighter shades tend to be easier to maintain and show dust less noticeably. Darker colours like Bluish Black and Opulent Red look distinctive but need more frequent washing to stay presentable, especially if your car parks outdoors regularly. Neutral tones like Grandeur Grey and Splendid Silver typically hold resale value more consistently and are the practical choice if you plan to sell within four or five years.

Maruti Baleno Videos

Four videos cover the Baleno from different perspectives. The official NEXA brand film explains the design direction and feature positioning.Hits-and-misses breakdown gives a quick strengths-and-weaknesses summary that’s useful before your showroom visit. The review video focuses on ride quality and city drivability. Motomotar’s review covers handling feel and day-to-day performance character. Watching these reviews back to back gives you a more grounded read on whether the AGS transmission and engine character will suit your usage than any brochure can.

Maruti Baleno Expert Review

Venkatesh Venky
Venkatesh Venky

The Baleno fits a specific kind of buyer: someone who needs a reliable city car, cares about running costs, wants a decent feature set, and doesn’t want to cross ₹9 lakh to get all of it. It’s not exciting to drive. But if you’re in the city every day, that won’t bother you much.

City use is where it’s most comfortable. The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine is smooth at low revs, and in manual trim the clutch is light enough that you don’t tire of it in congested traffic, which is exactly where most Baleno buyers spend their time anyway. The 3990 mm footprint makes tight parking and narrow lanes less stressful. For regular office commutes, it’s predictable. No drama.

The AGS variants make sense for stop-go traffic. But they’re still AMT in character. Shifts are noticeable, and the transmission works best when you’re patient with the throttle. Coming from a CVT? You’ll feel the difference immediately. That’s a real limitation, not a minor caveat. Worth a test drive before you commit.

No turbo-petrol either. The 88.5 bhp naturally aspirated engine handles the city without issue, but above 100 km/h on a two-lane highway it starts to feel stretched. CNG variants go lower still: 76.4 bhp and 98.5 Nm. Better suited to urban commuting and high-mileage city use than to highway touring.

Variant planning is logical. You’re looking at ₹5,98,900 for the Sigma MT at entry and ₹9,09,900 for the Alpha AGS at the top. The steps in between are gradual. Delta MT at ₹6,79,900 gets you a 17.78 cm touchscreen, steering audio controls, folding ORVMs, and a rear wiper, which covers the basics most city buyers actually need without pushing the price into uncomfortable territory. Zeta MT at ₹7,69,900 adds wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear AC vents, Suzuki Connect, and LED projector headlamps. Alpha variants bring the 22.86 cm touchscreen, head-up display, 360-view camera, and cruise control. Uncommon at this price.

The cabin is practical for a small family. Rear seat headroom is fine for average-height adults. Boot space is 318 litres, enough for your airport luggage and grocery runs without folding the rear seats. Three adults at the back? Fine for short city runs, tight on a longer highway trip. The 2520 mm wheelbase keeps the car stable at moderate speeds. Ride quality handles speed breakers and patchy tarmac sensibly when the car is properly loaded.

Mileage is one of the stronger ownership arguments. ARAI rates the petrol manual at 22.35 km/l and the AGS at 22.94 km/l. CNG manual goes to 30.61 km/kg. Real-world city numbers will be lower with AC on, but the car holds up well when you maintain it properly. Covering 40 km or more daily? The CNG variant’s per-kilometre fuel cost advantage is worth calculating for your specific route before ruling it out.

Safety has improved. Bharat NCAP results show 4-star adult occupant protection (24.04/32) and 3-star child occupant protection (34.81/49), published in 2024. The child score is notably lower than the adult result. Relevant if you’re buying this primarily for family use with young passengers. Six airbags and ABS with EBD are standard, along with ESP and hill-hold assist. The 360-view camera comes in from the Alpha trim.

NEXA’s service reach is a practical ownership advantage. Parts availability and service familiarity both benefit from Maruti’s scale, and resale value tends to hold predictably. That matters more in year three and four than it does the day you pick up the keys.

Editor's Verdict

Not the most exciting hatchback, but a sensible one. Running costs are competitive, the variant spread gives you genuine options without forced feature jumps, and upper trims offer features uncommon at this price. The AGS works fine for city use but isn't for buyers who want CVT-smooth shifts. And if strong highway performance is on your list, there's no turbo here. Pick the powertrain and trim based on your actual daily use, not just the headline price.
