Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has recently inaugurated the 3rd assembly line at its 2-wheeler manufacturing plant at Vithalapur, Gujrat. This addition also boosted the production capacity by 6.5 lakh units per annum. This Vithalapur facility is Honda’s largest state-of-the-art scooter-only plant in the world.
Popular models of Honda, such as the Activa, Activa 125 and Dio are produced at this facility. This HMSI plant also serves as a base to manufacture engines ( 250cc and 2-wheelers ) to cater to demands globally from markets like the US, Thailand and Japan. India is one of the most important and prominent bases for Honda globally when it comes to 2-wheeler manufacturing.
As stated by Tsutsumu Otani, President, CEO and MD of HMSI, the plan to increase the total annual production of the vehicles significantly was undertaken to serve the rising demand and customers more efficiently. The Gujarat plant currently produces scooters for domestic and global markets and continues to play a leading role in helping with the increasing demand for scooters across the globe.
A question still remains, if Honda is capable of producing a large number of 2-wheelers in their Gujarat plant and is already manufacturing some bikes for overseas markets, then why aren’t they paying more attention towards the higher demand for the launch of bikes such as the CBR 250 in India.
Anyways, the expansion of the Vithalapur plant has also created new employment opportunities with HMSI planning to increase the number of female workforce to maintain the proper production flow.
