BMW M 1000 XR Launched in India – Highlights

The BMW M 1000 XR is based on the BMW S 1000 XR, a powerful sports tourer. But unlike the latter which uses a 170 hp engine, the M 1000 XR gets its motor from the S 1000 RR superbike. Thanks to BMW’s ShiftCam variable valve timing/lift tech as well as other exotics like titanium valves, this engine generates 201 hp and 113 Nm of Torque, which makes the M 1000 XR the world’s most powerful touring machine yet.

Talking about the design, the bike is styled in line with the M series which includes a bigger set of wings, a sporty electronic suspension, an aggressive motorsport livery and even the superb M brakes from the M 1000 RR. The body is also refreshed for more sportiness, however, both the handlebar and footpeg are still placed on the practical and comfortable side. Despite all the style and sportiness, the bike remains beefed up with a 20-litre duel tank and an 850 mm seat height.

The bike is obviously packed with electronic rider assists at a similar level as the M 1000 RR superbike which includes multiple riding modes, launch control, Race ABS, a pitlane speed limiter and more. But unlike a superbike, the M 1000 XR still has comfort features such as cruise control, heated grips and tyre pressure monitoring, which ensures a pleasant touring experience.

In India, we only get the earlier mentioned M Competition version only which sports plenty of premium elements like carbon-fibre wheels, billet M rider and passenger forests, bits of carbon-fibre bodywork here and there and an M GPS lap timer. The result of all these is a 223 kg kerb weight which is approx 3 kg lighter than the S 1000 XR.

With a premium price tag of Rs 45 Lakh (ex-showroom, India) the M 1000 XR is placed between the M 1000 R and the M 1000 RR. While this is a high price to pay, the bike also promises BMW’s beautiful engineering and exclusivity of one of the world’s most exotic and capable superbikes.
