Tata Motors builds everything from the Tiago hatchback to heavy trucks and city buses, and it all happens at eight plants spread across India. That list looks nothing like it did two years ago. A new factory has come up in Tamil Nadu, the old Ford plant at Sanand now builds the Nexon and the Sierra, and the company itself split into two in October 2025. So if you’ve ever wondered where your car (or your neighbour’s Ace) actually comes from, here’s the current map, plant by plant.
How Many Tata Motors Plants Are in India?
As of 2026, Tata Motors has eight manufacturing plants in India: Pune (Pimpri-Chinchwad) in Maharashtra, two at Sanand in Gujarat, Ranipet in Tamil Nadu, Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, Pantnagar in Uttarakhand, Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh and Dharwad in Karnataka.
Before you quote that number anywhere, though, there’s context you should know: Tata Motors stopped being one company on 1 October 2025. The demerger created Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (TMPV), which handles cars, EVs and Jaguar Land Rover, while the commercial vehicle business kept the Tata Motors name for its trucks and buses. Four plants build cars and five build commercial vehicles. Nine from eight? The Pune campus sits on both lists, since Pimpri-Chinchwad houses separate car and commercial vehicle operations.
The newest entry is Ranipet. Tamil Nadu’s chief minister inaugurated the ₹9,000 crore plant at Panapakkam on 9 February 2026, and the first vehicle out of the gate was a locally built Range Rover Evoque.

Which Tata Plants Make Cars?
Every Tata car sold today comes from four TMPV plants, with one asterisk we’ll get to in a moment.
Pune (Pimpri-Chinchwad), Maharashtra
Tata’s Pune campus has been running since 1966 and covers roughly 930 acres across Pimpri and Chinchwad, which makes it the company’s largest site. If your Tata is a Punch, Harrier or Safari, it was built here. The Harrier and Safari lines are run by an all-women assembly crew, something Tata’s quite proud of. The commercial side of the same campus produces engines in diesel and CNG forms, press tools and bus chassis.
Sanand I, Gujarat
This one started life in 2010 as the Nano plant. Today it builds the Tiago and Tigor along with their EV and CNG versions, so it’s the source of most of Tata’s budget cars. In March 2024 its one millionth car, a petrol Tiago, rolled off the line.
Sanand II, Gujarat
Tata bought Ford India’s 460-acre factory next door in January 2023 for ₹725.7 crore and had the Nexon rolling out by January 2024, with the Nexon.ev following that April. The new Sierra is built here as well. Capacity stands at 300,000 vehicles a year and can stretch to 420,000, so there’s a decent chance your next Tata SUV comes from this line.
Ranipet (Panapakkam), Tamil Nadu
The newest plant cost about ₹9,000 crore and opened in February 2026 with JLR assembly, starting with the Range Rover Evoque. Tata plans to take it to 250,000 vehicles a year over five to seven years and use it for next-generation models, including EVs, from both Tata and JLR. Curious what those might be? So Where Is the Nexon Made?
Here’s the asterisk. The Nexon, Altroz and Curvv are built at Ranjangaon near Pune by Fiat India Automobiles, a 50:50 joint venture between Tata Motors and Stellantis. The same plant makes the Jeep Compass. It has a capacity of 222,000 vehicles a year and has built more than 1.37 million vehicles over two decades. Since January 2024 the Nexon also comes out of Sanand II, so your Nexon could be from either place.
Which Plants Make Tata Trucks and Buses?
Jamshedpur, Jharkhand
The original. Tata’s been building vehicles here since 1945, and the 822-acre plant remains the heart of its heavy truck business. It also makes engines, including through the Tata Cummins joint venture, along with axles and transmissions.
Pantnagar, Uttarakhand
Commissioned in 2008, Pantnagar is where the Ace comes from, the mini truck that created an entire segment in India, together with other small commercial vehicles.
Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh
Running since 1992, Lucknow focuses on buses. If you’ve ridden a city bus in India, there’s a fair chance it started here: the plant turns out fully built buses and chassis in low-floor, ultra-low-floor, CNG and rear-engine formats, and it houses an engineering research centre.
Dharwad, Karnataka
Dharwad began as Tata Marcopolo Motors, a bus-building joint venture with Brazil’s Marcopolo. Tata bought out its partner’s 49 percent stake in August 2022, and the plant continues to produce the Starbus range and other fully built buses.
