New Rivian R2 EV SUV Debuts

Rivian has recently revealed its new global electric SUV, called the Rivian R2. This newest SUV will join the brand’s lineup with the R1S and R1T, acting as a stepping stone for the brand’s plans to expand its portfolio and will go into the production stage by 2026. The R2 looks like a smaller version of the R1S with an upright stance and boxy proportions. Alongside the Californian brand also revealed two new models – R3 and R3X.

The front of the EV sports capsule-like headlamps and a lightbar running behind it. The rear of the SUV also carries sleek taillights on both sides connected by a lightbar similar to the one in the front with RIVIAN lettering below it. The R2 has Rivian’s special design language which is quite in the SUV market and has a very minimalistic yet rugged style. One highlighted feature of the SUV is the powered rear glass that drops into the liftgate, providing a functional gear-carrying facility and a cool open-air driving experience.

Going Inside, the R2 has a finished upcycled birch wood trim and elements crafted from ocean plastic. The cabin design is very similar to the larger R1 with its physical controls, a walk-through design, and a floating dash with dual screens. However, the R2 gets a new steering design with integrated controls and haptic feedback. The first and second-row seats can be completely folded-flat, a useful and practical feature for catering to different cargo needs.

The R2 EV also features a highly improved diving capability thanks to Rivian’s perception stack which includes 11 cameras, 5 radar and an advanced computing platform. This tech not only enhances safety but also allows future updates via Rivian’s software platform.

Talking about dimensions, the R2 is 4,714 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width and 1.699 mm in height. The SUV also has a wheelbase of 2,936 mm with a ground clearance of up to 249 mm.

The SUV is built on a new midsize vehicle platform and thanks to that the R2 will be available in a variety of configs including a single-motor RWD, dual-motor AWD and the top of the line Tri-motor AWD. As for performance, the R2 will come with 2 battery sizes with a larger pack offering over 480 km of range on a single charge and can go 0-100 kph in just under 3 seconds at best.

Easiness of charging has also been prioritised in the SUV by Rivian and hence its DC charging is compatible with both NACS (Native) and CCS (Adapter) standards, which allows rapid charging from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes.
