The Jeep Compass lineup gets a new engine option which is a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol unit. The engine is rather powerful in its segment and generates a whopping 272 hp and 400 Nm of Torque, making it the most powerful Compass yet. This is the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine which we can spot inside the Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler in the Indian market. This unit will also be used to power up the Jeep Commander overseas, which is basically the Meridian SUV in India.
As mentioned earlier, the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol is already used by the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, so the engine is not an all-new unit, but rather a tired and tested one from FCA’s Global Medium Engine family. The motor is available with different tuning options and even a hybrid setup in some markets. This very engine is also used to run some of the Alfa Romeo and Maserati models with a different state of tune.
Talking about the one in the Compass, it gets a direct injection and a dual VVT setup which helps the SUV go 0 to 100 kph in 6.3 seconds, with a top speed of 228 kph. It comes paired with a 9-speed torque convertor automatic and a full-time 4WD as standard with Mud and Sand modes. Furthermore, it also gets larger 300 mm disc brakes and recalibrated shock absorbers.
As of now, Jeep does not have a petrol-powered Compass in its India portfolio, but the brand is working on re-launching the Compass Petrol in India. However, that engine is a much smaller 1.3-litre turbo-petrol which produces around 185 hp, plenty powerful for Indian roads but a weaker engine when compared to the 2.0-litre turbo petrol. The latter engine will make its debut in our market by 2025 and is expected to power the Jeep Meridian as well. Before that, the 2024 Meridian will be launched in India soon.
