The Lexus EV concept is a sporty electric car from the Japanese carmaker that will debut in October at the Tokyo Motor Show and hit production in 2026. The car’s main highlight will be its huge range of 800 km on a single charge.
Lexus EV Concept – What do we know till now?
The EV will feature a low-slung design that will be inspired by the Lexus Saloon concept that was unveiled in 2021. The design includes a newly updated headlight, rear-view cameras and an aggressive front profile, inspired by the LFA supercar. The design is likely to change during production. The car will likely also have spacious interiors and a fastback design.
This concept will be the first step for Lexus to electrify their entire line-up by 2035. The brand also states this concept will revolutionize the structure of its vehicle, change the production method and also revamp its software platform.
Lexus will also reportedly preview a new approach to car production along with the EV at the Japan Mobility show next month.
Lexus EV Concept: Battery and Range
According to Lexus, the car will use Toyota’s new Lithium-ion battery technology which has efficient and slimmer battery packs. This will allow the car to have a massive range of 800 km on a single charge.
Toyota also plans to offer a ‘High Performance’ solid-state battery option, which will offer a claimed range of over 1,000 km on a single charge, however, this particular battery hasn’t been used by the brand in any production car yet.
The battery will let the EVs boast a lower-slung and aerodynamic design without compromising spacious interiors.
Lexus EV Concept: Rivals and India launch
The announcement of the Lexus EV concept came at a time when other carmakers introduced their EV concepts like the Mercedes Concept CLA and BMW Neue Klasse. Once released in 2026, the car will rival the likes of the award-winning Hyundai Ioniq 6 and BMW i4. Pricing is not known yet but it will be around the price range of its competitors mentioned before. The Lotus Emeya can also be a competitor but pricing differences and features after the Lexus EV’s launch may indicate otherwise.
Lexus also has a good line-up in India such as the NX, RX, LX and Toyota Vellfire-based luxury MPV, the LM. There are no all-electric SUVs in India from the brand yet but it does have a wide range of plug-in hybrid cars.
Interestingly while Lexus is a luxury brand, its parent company Toyota recently launched the Toyota Century SUV which is the second car in the brand’s most expensive line-up in the Japanese market.
