Hyundai Motors India is the 2nd largest car manufacturer in India and the demand for Hyundai cars has been increasing day by day. The rising demand is being met by two large manufacturing facilities, both near Chennai and are spread over a total of 535 acres.
Hyundai’s Irrungattukottai and Sriperumbudur Plants
In 1996, Hyundai Motor Company set up its 1st plant in Irrungattukottai near Chennai in Tamil Nadu called Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL). The operations began in 1998 with its first product, the Santro. To tackle the increasing demand, the brand established its second plant in February 2008 in Sriperumbudur. While the 1st and 2nd plants had a manufacturing capacity of 3,30,000 units/yr and 3,50,000 units/yr meaning 6,80,000 units/yr in total, it has since increased to 7,40,000 units per year which is approx 14% of global output. The brand reported 5,86,610 units of vehicles from its Tamil Nadu-based plants during April-December in FY24.
Currently, the plants manufacture the company’s whole line-up including Grand i10 Nios, I20, I20 N Line, Venue, Exter, Venue N Line, Creta, Creta N Line, Tucson, Alcazar and even the award-winning Ioniq 5 EV. Furthermore, HMIL is also the global export hub for compact cars for emerging markets. For now, it exports to around 85 countries across the world including Africa, Latin America, Australia, Asia Pacific, Bangladesh, Nepal and the Middle East.
The Plants are divided into sections: Press Shops which convert sheet to body panels accurately and consistently.
Then comes a body shop that builds full-body shells from panels. For welding operations, Automated robotic arms are used.
There’s also the Paint shop which uses environment-friendly water-based processes for long-lasting exteriors.
After painting, The Assembly shop fits all the engine, suspension and electrical body parts into the car. The cars also go under testing here.
At the end, the Engine & Transmission Shop is where a wide range of engines are made for cars. It’s one of the biggest engine shops in the country.
Hyundai Pune Plant
Hyundai acquired General Motors’s plant in Talegaon, Pune and will invest Rs 7,000 Crore for Vehicle Capacity creation. The plant had a capacity of 1,30,000 units per annum and it will likely increase, boosting Hyundai’s production capacity close to 1 million units per annum in the country, if the plant comes under Hyundai. That being said, Hyundai previously signed an APA for acquisition and assignment of land, buildings and machinery back in 2023. The handover is yet to take place because of an ongoing protest by its employees who have been protesting against the takeover. Despite this, Hyundai announced that it will start producing vehicles in the GM plant from 2025.
This will be the first time Hyundai is investing in vehicle capacity outside Tamil Nadu.
