We can all agree that we Indians love to travel with our families and most of us look for a car for that purpose, but let’s be honest, it’s not so simple. There are several factors that come into play when choosing the right car for your family. Aside from your family size which matters a lot, the car brand and the model you choose are also important since you’ll want a car that is reliable, comfortable and most importantly keeps your family safe. Budget might also come into play since not everyone can afford a BMW or Volvo. If you want a balanced car that has it all but will not burn a hole in your wallet, Hyundai might be your go-to brand. Let me explain.
Why Hyundai?
You might wonder why Hyundai, why not Tata or Mahindra or even Maruti Suzuki. Well, Tata is known for its top-notch safety while keeping everything under budget but recently many of its models have been having quality issues with their models straight out of the showroom and even some showroom services are not up to the mark. Mahindra also has the same problem with quality and reliability and the fit & finish of some of their models are not up to the mark. Then comes Maruti Suzuki, which has reliable and affordable cars with a huge service network, but they are known to have poor build quality.
You might say that there are other brands like Toyota, VW and Skoda which not only have top-notch build quality but are also reliable. The problem with these brands is they are expensive to own and maintain.
Now coming to Hyundai, the Korean brand has been operating in the Indian market for decades now and has been successful since its Inception. It has been delivering solid products for the Indian market like the Santro, Accent, Creta, i10 and Tucson. They are almost as good as Toyota in reliability, they are on par with Maruti when it comes to affordability and service and their build quality and safety are good across their entire range. As a bonus, Hyundai cars are also loaded with features.
Hyundai has an extensive portfolio in India with a car for everyone in every budget. Choosing the right model might be confusing for you, but don’t worry I got you. Just take a look at the list below which has the best model you can pick at every budget. Do note this is strictly my opinion so take this list as advice from a friend, the final decision is entirely yours to take.
Entry-Level
If you want a hatchback which is good for urban commutes go for the Santro (Rs 4.9 – Rs 6.4 Lakh). Just don’t pick the top variant or the Grand i10 Nios, because then you can spend a little more and get the i20 (Rs 7.04 Lakh), which is Hyundai’s premium hatchback and offers even for features and good design. If you are on a strict budget, both the Santro and Grand i10 Nios will do just fine. Since these are hatchbacks, they are ideal for a family of 4 or 5.
In the case of sedans, Hyundai offers the Aura (Rs 6.09 Lakh) as its entry-level model. Don’t judge the car by its price because the car comes loaded with features and it looks nice. The build quality is also good, in fact, every Hyundai car has good build quality so I won’t be repeating the same point for each car.
If you want to go with the trend and want an SUV, Hyundai offers the Venue (Rs 7.53 Lakh) which despite its price is a solid value-for-money option. It offers a bold design along with a comprehensive list of features, making it one of the best in its segment. We also have the Exter which is more affordable than the Venue but the Venue is preferred because it’s been out in the market for longer and offers way more for the price difference. Also, the Venue is a bit bigger and more spacious, making trips with your family more comfortable. Overall, go for the Exter only if you are on a tight budget or you like its exterior.
Premium
Now let’s venture into the premium category and again Hyundai offers a lot here too. For SUV lovers, of course, Hyundai’s Golden Boy Creta (Rs 11 – Rs 20.15 Lakh) is recommended. This midsize SUV is loaded with features and comes with a premium design making it a good value and it’s a good family car too thanks to its spacious cabin. But what if your is bigger, say 7 to 8 members? Then the Alcazar 7-seater will be the perfect choice for you. It’s essentially a 7-seater Creta with slightly different features and design.
If budget is no issue, you can go for the Tucson (Rs 29.01 – Rs 35.94 Lakh) which has the best comfort along with the best-in-class features and a luxurious cabin. The Tucson will make every trip with your family enjoyable and comfortable without any compromises.
In case you want an EV, Hyundai currently has the IONIQ 5 (Rs 46.05 Lakh) only in India which is a very good premium electric car if your budget allows. It’s an award-winning car and naturally has a unique design and serious high technology inside. Although it looks bigger in real life, it’s still not recommended for big families.
Should You Wait?
The current Hyundai Lineup is indeed good and you won’t go wrong with any of these cars. But if you are not in a hurry, you can wait since Hyundai has many car launches scheduled for India like the Creta EV and Alcazar facelift. An MPV is also expected to come called the Stargazer which will be perfect for big families. The Santa Fe. New-Gen Tucson and Palisade are also likely to come to our market, giving more options for buyers looking for premium options.
