Volkswagen Tiguan 3rd Gen officially revealed, Restyled & Feature loaded

The SUV is based on the MQB-Evo platform which is religiously used by VW and Skoda globally. The all-new Tiguan shares its platform with the Passat and also shares some design elements like the expansive lower intake, thin grille, and optional illuminated logo bar that connects the LED headlights like a bridge. You can easily figure that out by looking at the SUV from the front. However, it shares its rear look with the Taigo (don’t confuse it with Tata Tiago), with the logo bar connecting the light clusters and rear bumper. Though you also argue it has a far resemblance with the Taigo from the front too.

When compared to the old Tiguan, the new one stands 30mm longer and 4mm taller.

Now, who doesn’t love tech and features in a car? It obviously makes the experience more comfortable and enjoyable. The all-new Tiguan is loaded with enhanced tech and new features. You get the VW’s latest version of the MIB (Not Men in Black) infotainment system, over-the-air software update capability, and upgraded connectivity functions.

Before going further it’s important we explore the interiors briefly. So, the new Tiguan gets a new cabin that has a cleaner and more sophisticated look, premium materials, and more space. The dashboard has also been redesigned and now features illuminated trim elements, new-look air vents, and a new control matrix. It also gets a 10.3-inch instrument display and a 12.9-inch infotainment display which goes up to 15.0 inches.

The steering wheel now has more buttons and switches as opposed to the previous Tiguan’s touch-sensitive controls. Some variants are also equipped with a HUD unit which shows info on the windscreen and a wireless phone charger.

There’s also a new centre console by which you can alter the driving modes, audio volume, and VW’s atmospheres with settings like Lounge, Energetic, Minimal, Joy, and Me.

The Headroom has also increased by 8mm and 10mm in front and rear respectively. Boot space in non-plug-in hybrid increased by 37 litres.

The Tiguan has a new mild-hybrid 1.5-litre petrol that produces either 131hp or 150hp in the FWD eTSI models.

What really changed is the petrol-electric drivetrain that was earlier used by the Tiguan variants. It’s now based on the 1.5-litre engine instead of the old 1.4-litre unit and has a really powerful electric motor. However, the power remains the same.

The conventional 2.0-litre petrol engine also gets an update and develops 204hp and 265hp in the new 4WD TSI 4motion models. The 19.7kWh battery is also new and offers a range of 100km. The fuel-run Tiguan models use a 7-speed dual-clutch Auto gearbox, with the hybrids sporting a 6-speed.

That being said, the all-new Tiguan is expected to launch in India since the old gen is currently on sale here. But the chances are high since VW is quite committed to the Indian market. For now, the brand will bring a new 3-row SUV based on China’s Tayron SUV.
