Tata Motors has recently announced that the Altroz EV will launch in India about 5 years after the first concept was put on display. The Atroz EV was showcased both at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and the 2020 Auto Expo, so the obvious year of the launch stands at 2025.
2025 Tata Altroz EV – Why the Delay?
Up until now, there was a huge radio silence regarding the launch of the Altroz EV, and in the meantime, Tata rolled out the Punch EV and Tiago EV instead. The reason for the delayed launch of the Altroz EV was some serious difficulties Tata faced during its development back in 2021.
The problem was the battery pack which was placed under the floor, and reduced the ground clearance to 145mm from 165mm. Also raising the stance of the Altroz Electric was not an option since it would make it look like a crossover or C-SUV rather than a hatch.
Apart from this, the MD of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Business, Shailesh Chandra confirmed that the all-electric Altroz is on the launch list and will arrive by next year, after the launch of the Punch EV, Curvv, Harrier EV and Sierra. The statement not only confirms the launch of the EV but also hints that Tata has successfully figured out the battery packaging issue.
Speaking of battery, the Altroz EV is expected to carry similar-sized batteries as the Punch EV since it will be based on the same platform as the Punch. This means the battery capacity will likely be 25kWh – 35kWh with a driving range of around 315-421 km. The engine power of the hatch is also expected to be similar to the Punch EV (82-122hp). But they will be different in terms of pricing and target audience.
