Renault and Nissan recently announced the launch of two new SUVs which include the all-new Duster and its Nissan Twin set to launch in late 2025. Both models will also get their 7-seater versions that are expected to go live by late 2026, with both brands releasing a joint teaser for both models. Now, all the 4 SUVs are likely to get only a pair of turbo-petrol options.
The SUVs are likely to use a jacked-up version of the entry-level turbo engine, HR10 which is a 1.0-litre unit that powers the Magnite and Kiger. The second option is the HR13 which is a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine that debuted on the Nissan Kicks and is offered on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan and also the previous-gen Duster. Both engines will likely sport a 6-speed manual and CVT gearbox options.
For the base variants, the Renault Duster and its Nissan counterpart might use a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine but there are currently no plans to reintroduce the iconic k9K diesel. Instead, a hybrid powertrain is also being considered, but its total cost of development has not been added to the project yet.
The 4 SUVs will be based on the modular CMF-B platform developed under the Renault-Nissan Alliance that underpins a lot of global models for both car makers as well as Renault’s sister brand Dacia. This platform will be localised heavily for the Indian market to get that competitive pricing.
The first-gen Duster revolutionized the midsize segment in India with its rugged and true SUV-like looks with a mix of several powertrain options. However, the upcoming SUVs will be petrol-only and re-entering the highly competitive midsize SUV segment won’t be easy for the brands. But a mix of design, technology and aggressive pricing might just work the charms for Renault and Nissan.
Renault and Nissan will likely launch their respective Creta rivals first, followed by the 7-seater versions.
