Volkswagen has recently announced the development of a new 3-row Tayron SUV, meant to take the place of Tiguan Allspace. The SUV will go by Tayron everywhere in the world including India, except the USA, and will retain the Tiguan name due to its popularity. Smart move VW.
Though an SUV called Tayron is currently on sale in the Chinese market, the upcoming car will be sold on a global platform.
What is the VW 3-row Tayron?
It’s a Volkswagen SUV! The SUV will be based on the MQB-Evo platform, which is also used by the new 5-seater Tiguan revealed officially recently. But the design will be quite different than the Tiguan. The Tayron will have an SUV and Coupe-type bodyshells, with the former possibly having 5 and 7-seater options, while the Coupe will likely come with only 5. VW also stated it will be larger than the current Tiguan Allspace. Well, just make it an MPV at this point.
VW Tayron’s History
The Tayron was first presented as a concept during the VW Touareg III premiere back in 2018. In late 2018, the vehicle had its post-production debut at the Chengdu Motor Show and has been on sale in China ever since.
The car is available in two body types – SUV and Coupe
The SUV features a 1.4-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox as a standard. The Tayron SUV has 3 trims named the 1.4-litre 280 TSI (150hp), 2.0-litre 330 TSI (186hp), and 2.0-litre 380 TSI (220hp) while the other models include the Tayron GTE Plug-In Hybrid and R-line.
Now the Coupe is named the Tayron X and was introduced in 2020. It doesn’t have any major difference from the SUV, apart from the body shape and a bit longer than the latter. The Coupe was shown as a concept at Auto Shanghai, back in 2019.
VW 3-row Tayron Powertrain and India Launch
In India, VW will likely stick with the 2.0-litre petrol engine, which may seem okay until you see its international offerings.
VW already confirmed earlier that for the international markets, the 3-row Tayron will be offered two 2.0-litre options – a diesel and petrol engine, both will feature a 48V mild-hybrid mated with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic as standard.
Furthermore, the brand will also offer the choice of 2 petrol plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs), both sporting a 1.5-litre petrol with 19.7Kwh battery producing 204hp and 272hp combined with an electric range of 100km and DC fast charging support. Now, VW may bring the PHEVs variants in India, so just wait and observe.
That being said, the 3-row Tayron could launch in India by 2025 as CKD kits. The Tiguan Allspace previously was offered as a CBU back in 2020.
